Maceteros de cerámica vs. artesanales: cuál es mejor para interior

Ceramic vs. handcrafted planters: which is better for indoor use

Most comparison articles about planters end up recommending the product of whoever wrote them. This one doesn’t. The goal is for you to make the right choice based on what you actually need.

What materials we’re talking about

Ceramic and stoneware: clay fired at high temperature, glazed or unglazed. Glazed ceramic is more moisture-resistant. Stoneware is denser and more impact-resistant. These have been the most widely used materials in designer planters for decades.

Artisan manufacture: layer-by-layer production process using a proprietary material. The colour is integrated into the material during manufacture, without external paint. The result is a lighter object than ceramic, with shapes that would be very difficult to achieve on a potter’s wheel.

When to choose ceramic

Ceramic wins in three specific situations: outdoor use with direct rain and UV exposure (artisan materials are not optimised for this), plants that need very frequent watering where the weight of the pot prevents tipping, and when the budget is tight and customisation is not a priority.

When to choose artisan manufacture

The artisan process wins when design is the main criterion: shapes that don’t exist in catalogue ceramics, exact colours for a specific space, personalisation with a name or initial. Also when weight matters: shelves with limited load capacity, wall planters, frequent house moves. And for personalised gifts, where generic ceramics simply can’t compete.

The weight difference in practice

An artisan 18 cm planter weighs between 180 and 300 g when empty. The ceramic equivalent weighs between 600 g and 1.2 kg. The difference matters in three cases: IKEA shelves or similar with limited load capacity per shelf, wall planters fixed with adhesive (adhesive has a weight limit), and if you move house frequently and transport plants.

The point nobody mentions: made-to-order production

Most ceramic planters on the market are produced in series, months in advance. That means surplus stock, colours available based on what was manufactured that year, and zero possibility of change. Fluxenna planters are made within 48 hours of the order, in Spain. No pre-stock. No surplus. The colour you choose is the colour you receive.
